There was also a dream to establish Hindi as the national language in the India of Mahatma Gandhi’s dreams. He had said that any nation becomes dumb without a national language. In the first World Hindi Conference (January 10-14, 1975) held in Nagpur, a resolution was passed that Hindi should be given place in the United Nations as an official language and an International Hindi University should be established with its headquarters at Wardha. . In the Second World Hindi Conference held in Mauritius in August, 1976, it was decided that a World Hindi Center should be established in Mauritius which could coordinate the activities of Hindi all over the world.
After the Fourth World Hindi Conference (December-1993), the World Hindi Secretariat was established in Mauritius and the need was felt to give shape to the establishment of an International Hindi University in India. This became possible in the year 1997 – when by passing an act by the Parliament of India, Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University was established at Wardha, the workplace of the Father of the Nation. With the establishment of this university, a longing of Bhartendu Babu Harishchandra was also fulfilled which was prevailing in his mind and mind. That longing was ‘to establish a pure Hindi university from our industry’.
The Act (No. 3) passed by the Parliament in the year 1997 proposes to establish a residential university for the promotion and development of Hindi language and literature through education and research, which is capable of developing superior functional efficiency in Hindi language, so that It can be recognized as a major international language. This university started functioning in the last decade of the twentieth century. This university, established in the philosophical light of Mahatma Gandhi, has taught Hindi language and literature as well as subjects based on Gandhiji’s favorite principles – ‘Ahimsa and Peace Studies’ and ‘Women’s Studies’. – has been made a major part of its curriculum. Here, emphasis is also being laid on developing Hindi as the carrier language of technical information and various businesses. New courses related to this are being introduced. The intention of this university is that through Hindi medium, different disciplines and areas of knowledge should make deep inroads not only in India but also in the world public and Hindi should become the heart of the world. The history of the Indian freedom struggle is witness to the fact that Hindi, the national language of the Union of India, is the language of mutual cooperation, companionship and love. Establishing it in the world community would be extremely beneficial for the promotion of these values. Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University is a unique university in its nature. This is the only university in the world working for the promotion of Hindi, where French, Chinese, Foreign languages like Spanish and Japanese are taught through Hindi medium. This is a big milestone on the path of ‘Global Hindi’.
For the purpose of making Hindi a world language, this university has taken two important steps. This university is going to play the role of a coordinator for the study and research of various disciplines through Hindi and Hindi medium in universities and institutions abroad, so it has taken the initiative to provide copyright-free important Hindi literature from Bharatendu to Hindi readers all over the world. In the second phase, this literature will be made available in major languages of the world. Efforts are also being made by the university to make quality material available in Hindi in various disciplines of knowledge. The University is translating important text in the fields of Women’s Studies, Humanities and Film and Drama, spread across the languages of the world, and soon this text will be available to the students of the University as well as other scholars.
