The Karnataka University of Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences was established vide Karnataka Act No. 9, 2004 published in the Karnataka Gazette on February 23, 2004 for the prime development of agro-based industries such as animal husbandry, dairy farming and fish farming. The University started functioning from April 1, 2005. It was established with the mission of imparting education, learning, research and extension education and rural development in veterinary, animal science, dairy and fisheries sciences in Karnataka with the responsibility of transfer of technologies to villages.
The University has a motto of ‘Gramyamukhi – Raithasnehi’ which states that the main objective of the University is the welfare of the farming people. Prof. R. N. Srinivasa Gowda was appointed as the first chancellor. He served from September 2004 to 9 February 2008. And then Prof. G. S. Bhat and Dr. S. Mallikarjunappa served as the in-charge Chancellor from February 10, 2008 to July 24, 2008. Prof. Suresh Honnappagol was the full-time chancellor for a second term from 2008 to 2012. Dr. as Chancellor of the third term. C. Renuka Prasad was from 2012 to 2016. Dr. RV Prasad was the in-charge chancellor from 2016 to February 2018. Prof. H. D. Narayanaswamy served as Chancellor from February 2018 to February 2022. And then Prof. K. C. Veeranna is the chancellor.
Kapapamevivi is an autonomous educational institution. There is a Management Board which functions as per the Acts and Rules framed by the Government of Karnataka. The University has co-operation of Finance Committee to function administratively. It consists of Board of Studies and Vidya Shyaka Parishad of various bodies to monitor academic matters. In charge of research and extension activities are the Council of Research and the Council of Extension Education respectively.
