The institute was founded by Unison Group. It is a private university. The university, previously, offered engineering programs but it was gradually changed to a university that offers various programs at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The DIT was declared as DIT University by the Uttarakhand State Government due to its excellence in Education and Research.
